Job Description:


This position reports to the Health Department Manager or designate and supervises and coordinates the activities of the Community Health Worker/s, Community Health Aide/s and patient transportation. This position will also liaise with other First Nations health staff/nurses, VIHA, Inter-Tribal Health Authority, First Nations Health Authority and BC Centre for Disease Control.


  • Plans, designs and implements community health programs ranging from pre- and post-natal and pediatric care through to adult/Elder/disabled persons care. Health care areas include diabetes, immunization, communicable disease surveillance and treatment, and HIV/AIDS prevention.
  • Updates client files, and ensure accuracy of information.
  • Delivers a wide variety of community health clinics and health promotion workshops.
  • Uses a holistic approach to educate clients and families to understand client illness or injury (i.e., self-care, health promotion)
  • Home visits, assessments (i.e., physical/physcological needs), plans of care and client advocacy, including helping clients express their health needs in trying to access external health care services/information.
  • Identifies and recommends community health service delivery strategies and priorities.
  • Ensures quality nursing care is provided and appropriate administrative procedures are followed; recommends and develops health/safety policies and procedures.
  • Participates in regular inter-agency and community based health meeting.
  • Administers nursing budget and ensures that supplies and equipment are available.


  • Completion of a university, college or other approved registered nursing program (e.g., BSc.N with community health emphasis or Public Health diploma)
  • Valid CRNBC Registration.
  • A minimum of two years of recent nursing experience in an acute care setting or community-based setting.
  • Completion of Management/Administration Program (i.e., Nursing Unit Administration or other degrees, diplomas, certificates or studies, with demonstrated progression to supervisory-level positions in nursing.
  • Prior experience working with Aboriginal organizations in health or social programs is desirable.
  • A tuberculosis (TB) test and proof of immunizations are required.
  • Clear criminal record check.
  • Valid driver’s license & access to a vehicle. 
Preferred Skills:


  • Ability to apply and assess current nursing practices (including public health) to ensure that the clients’ physical, emotional, psychosocial, spiritual and educational needs are met.
  • Ability to work cross-culturally, and especially with First Nations communities.
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, implementing Indigenous worldviews within an health environment.
  • Knowledge of local Indigenous communities’ history, social circumstances and protocols
  • Communication skills; both verbally and in writing.
  • Experience with program planning, budgeting and reports.
  • Computer literate (required to use health data software).
  • Able to work in a collaborative environment.
