The purpose of the program is to serve the Community of TSAWOUT by providing quality educational support, nutritional snacks and advocacy to the schools on behalf of the students.

The goal of the program is to provide a structured and safe environment, which promotes responsible behaviour, respect to others and a positive attitude for all students and staff. Students focus on homework, reading, writing, math and group activities. By using the motto R.R.I.C.H.H., the After-School Program has helped to successfully motivate the children, teach teamwork, instill values and inspire students to become “Role Models,” demonstrating the attributes of Respectfulness, Responsibility, Independence, Cooperation, Helpfulness and Honesty.

History of T.A.S.P.

The TSAWOUT After-School Program began in 2001 under the Social Development Department. It was originally attended by 10 students at elementary grade level, from 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm, at “The Drop-In.”  Over the next 5 years, the program expanded to include a full range of age groups and grade levels; Kindergarten to Grade 12. The T.A.S. Program shifted its focus from movies and games to reading, writing and arithmatic, culturally appropriate crafts and a SENCOTEN Language Program.

Since 2003, a need was recognized for a more structured environment and grade appropriate classrooms. This helped us to improve focus and ensure that the time spent at the program was effective. Since 2007 the program has grown further in terms of student attendance.

Relationships have been forged with various volunteer individuals and groups, including the University of Victoria, the  ȽÁU, WELṈEW̱  Tribal School and the Saanich Schools.

The TSAWOUT After-School Program has worked with over 125 children in the community. In 2010-2011 school year, 78 students were registered, with a daily average of 40 students attending. The success of the TSAWOUT After-School Program can be measured also in the attendance of HEAD START to Grade 1, students 4 to 6 years old; 22 were registered in 2011.  The TSAWOUT After-School Program is now supported by the TSAWOUT EDUCATION SUPPORT SERVICES and includes early learners of the TSAWOUT HEAD START Program.

The students arrive on the school bus, directly from their schools:  LAU WEL NEW Tribal School, Brentwood Elementary School,

ḰELSET Elementary School, Bayside Middle School, North Saanich Middle School, Stelly's Secondary School, Children's Development Center and Pacific Christian School.

As the students arrive between 3:00 pm - 3:45 pm they are fed a nutritious snack with the opportunity of having recreation in the TSAWOUT Gym before settling into their homework or assignments by 3:30 pm. Daily attendance is taken Monday to Friday, even if a student only attends for a snack or has to leave early. Dismissal is at 5:00 pm for HEAD START to Grade 5 students and 6:00 pm for Grade 6 to Grade 12 students.

Incentives & Recognition

Each classroom teacher has developed her own incentive or recognition system to recognize the student's hard work.

Students receive recognition at the end of the week or once a month as a class effort. They are rewarded with healthy snack prizes, swim passes, pizza vouchers, movie passes or classroom seasonal celebrations.

We are fortunate to have two certified teachers on staff and experienced and trained teacher assistants.  We have been utilizing the support of practicum students from the Nursing and Educational Departments of University of Victoria. We have also been a part of the STEM Project (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Outreach Program), through the Department of Science and Aboriginal Affairs at the University of Victoria. These are long-term arrangements. Other individuals, just as important, have volunteered on a regular basis and have developed strong, healthy relationships with our students, parents and staff.

More to Come

Please stay informed, as new programs are developed. We want to strengthen and expand the partnerships with the Saanich School District and W̱SÁNEĆ School Board and other services in our community who have been supportive of the TSAWOUT EDUCATION SUPPORT SERVICES, the HEAD START PROGRAM and the TSAWOUT After-School Program.
