Youth Program Update

E-mail Print PDF

Just to back track and let you know how I,TOTELṈEW̱,ÁUTW̱, learning house, is coming along.

I returned from my holiday from South America just in time to plan the TSAWOUT Halloween Party.  I expected many visitors from TSAWOUT, so there were plenty of after-school snacks: Indian Hot Dogs, chips, juice, and CANDY for students who joined the Youth Program staff and volunteers to go Trick or Treating through the offices. Thanks to Christina Cheply, Danger By Design Face Painter, for receiving our invitation.  Christine always makes special events, even more SPECIAL.

TSAWOUT YOUTH PROGRAM has been blessed to have so many people from the surrounding Saanich Area who are interested in the well-being of our children and youth.

Turtle Talk with the W.I.S.H. Program has been a valuable participant in the Youth Program with Maggie Reidy and Kelly Montgomery visiting the children every Tuesday in two separate sessions: Kindergarten to Grade 1 in the fall and winter, and the Grade 2 to Grade 3 in the spring.

We are also privileged to have Byte Camp join us again this Fall for the grade 2-5+ students, learning Claymation, “ Clay Figurines in Computer Animation.” Kimara Brilling and her assistants have been extremely valuable to the Youth Program.

On October 1st Val Bersenev, Sidney Martial Arts Black Belt Kung Fu Instructor, has attended with the Kindergarten to Grade 5 students.  Val has a great opportunity to work with the children to teach self-control, respect and self-confidence. Every class is filled with fun workout drills, lots of smiles and great an attitude.  Val says, “They are on the Quest to be their BEST! Are you? It makes you to be responsible, work hard and look forward to your personal achievements. Pick your goal and work hard towards it!”

Schedule for Kung Fu Classes held every Wednesday at Tsawout:

Kids class 3:45 pm
Adults class 4:15 pm
Sidney Fitness location every Saturday
Kids class 10:30 am
Adults class 11:00 am

To sign up with the classes please advise front desk at Tsawout First Nation or see Stephanie.

We appreciate our Art Teachers at the Youth Program. Thank You to Helen Close and her flexible schedule.  Helen brings many crafty ideas to the students. She is presently teaching art to the Head Start Class on Thursday with assistance from a dedicated volunteer, Meg Tronson.

The students look forward to Anna Walkus, as she brings her expertise in Beading and other Cultural Crafts to the students every Friday after school.  Thank You Anna, we appreciate you and your availability!  Your presence at the Youth Program definitely makes a positive difference.

Franklin Joe continues to be an outstanding substitute at the Youth Program; I know I can count on him and his knowledge of, “the expectations of the students.”  Franklin is a long-time volunteer and is very familiar with the Youth Program.  If you would like to be a volunteer, please come and fill out a volunteer application. A Criminal Record Check will also need to be completed through Sidney R.C.M.P. at no cost to you.  Parent Volunteers are more than welcome!

Thank you to Karen Stephenson for the yummy Halloween Cupcakes and Linda Theriault for your clerical support.

We welcome our Elders to also share their time with our Youth Program.  Thank you to Rose-Mary and Syble, who continue to tirelessly devote their time and energy every Wednesday, to tutoring.  Rose-Mary and Syble can be seen at the TSAWOUT Assembly of Praise Church every Wednesday morning.  They bring soup during the morning Bread Delivery, then they visit TSAWOUT families and end their adventures at the TSAWOUT Youth Program.

My endless tasks would not be completed without the hand of Arelis Tavarez. She is a Hard Worker, volunteering to do prep work every Thursday, Xeroxing bookwork and art books for the students. Starting December, Arelis will be volunteering in the Head Start Class on Monday and Tuesday. When she is not volunteering, she is supporting Elders.  Thank you Arelis.

Thank You Jackie-Rose for your valuable support for our “Youngsters” you are missed, but in turn we welcome Cynthia Pelkey to the team of Assistants, joining Kevin Wilson and Wayne-O Sam.

The TSAWOUT students have thoroughly enjoyed the extra-curricular RECREATIONAL activities planned by Bonnie Joe: Swimming, Basketball Camp and Boxing Camp.  Thank you Bonnie for coordinating this with the TSAWOUT Youth Program schedule.  They just can't get enough of BRAIN exercise and PHYSICAL exercise!

Our students are practising their Computer Skills too, thanks to Rob Bailey our “Technician.”  The computer lab is up and running and each student has their own LOGIN:  User Name and Password.  At least twice a week they practice Math, Spelling and Reading activities on the computer.  If you need a TSAWOUT Community LOGIN Account to complete a resume or just research, please see Stephanie Adams and I will be sure Rob gets your request.  Because the computers are used by the students of the TSAWOUT Youth Program, students' computer activities are monitored by TSAWOUT Youth Program staff on a program called, “iTalc Master.” This helps us to ensure internet safety and that they are accessing appropriate sites.

All these valuable programs will continue up until the December Christmas Break.  In December, the students can look forward to plenty of Christmas crafts with Helen Close and the Head Start class will enjoy Drumming and Singing with Tabita Marks, TSAWOUT Head Start Coordinator on Monday's.

TSAWOUT Youth Program Schedule for your child(ren)'s attendance:
Monday to Thursday from 3:00-5:00 pm.
Friday from 2:00-4:00 pm.

TSAWOUT Youth Program staff will be involved in the TSAWOUT Family Christmas Dinner and Gift Giving. Please mark your calendar.  You and your children and youth are WELCOME to attend. It will be held on Wednesday, DECEMBER 19th. Gift and individual or family picture with Santa from 2:00 pm - 5:30 pm and the TSAWOUT Community Christmas Dinner is from 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm.

TSAWOUT Youth Program will be closed for 2 weeks, during the Christmas School Break and will reopen in the NEW YEAR, January 7, 2013. Please do not hesitate to contact me between 9:30 am - 12:00 pm Monday to Friday if you have any concerns or suggestions.  I am here to listen.

Christmas Blessings to you and your relatives for a safe, healthy and peaceful Christmas Season!

MERRY CHRISTMAS,

Stephanie H. Adams
