Tsawout Longhouse Rebuilding Project

E-mail Print PDF
The tragic loss of our longhouse is a huge blow to our people. The importance of the longhouse in our community is central to our culture and who we are as Saanich people. Base upon the Fire Marshall's report  the cause of the fire is undetermined. A general meeting was called for the purposes of planning and organizing ourselves for the reconstruction of our Longhouse.

First, we would like to thank those who attended  both meetings. There have been a lot of inquiries about the reconstruction of the loss of the Tsawout Longhouse from members and the general capital region.

Included with the Tsawout members who attended the meetings, we had the honour of having members of the Central Saanich Fire Department, Saltspring Island residents, municipal representation and the local Tsawout home park residents.

We  have a few contributions toward the reconstruction. The amount received to date is  $15,500. Thank you cards have been sent to all the contibutors.

Organizing a Society

There are various steps needed to form a Society. First we needed to get names for the society. Names were collected and three names have been shortlisted.  If you are interested in what names have been shortlisted, please contact Eric Pelkey, at (250) 544 0962 or Rose Jimmy at (250) 652 1149.

The second step included the actual appliication. With respect to the application fees, Irvine Jimmy was kind enough to provide the funds to get the application started. A huge thank you to Irvine.

The contact information and spokesperson, on an interim basis, is Eric Pelkey. Eric will be the interim spokesperson until all the necessary documents are provided to get the society set up and operational.

The potential names for the society Board of Directors are as follows: Liz Underwood, Norm Underwood Sr., Helen Jack, Doreen Pelkey, Ray Sam, V. “Buster” Harry and Irvine Jimmy.

Until we have the society in place we have two individuals working with the Bank of Montreal on the trust account, Rose Jimmy and Stephanie Pelkey.

Fundraising Efforts

The Mary Winspear Centre has donated  access to their facility for any fundraising events related to the reconstruction of the longhouse. The first event will be an Art Auction, no date has been confirmed yet. Please stay tuned.

Anyone wanting to contribute toward this fundraising event however is encouraged to contact Rose Jimmy.
